7 Mistakes You're Making with Your Garage Door Before Storm Season (and How to Fix Them)

Storm season in the Pacific Northwest can turn a small garage door issue into a major headache. A little extra noise becomes a broken spring. A worn seal lets in wind-driven rain. Then the power goes out, and you discover your opener battery has been beeping for months.

I’ve gathered the seven mistakes I see homeowners make most often before wet, windy weather arrives. The good news is that many are easy to catch early. A few minutes of inspection now can help you avoid an inconvenient: and sometimes expensive: garage door repair later.

1. You’re Not Checking the Springs

Your garage door springs do most of the heavy lifting. The opener guides the door, but the springs counterbalance its weight. When they begin to wear, the opener has to work harder.

Moisture makes the problem worse. Humidity and surface rust can weaken metal over time, especially on older springs.

What to look for

With the door closed, look up at the springs. Watch for:

  • Visible gaps in a torsion spring

  • Heavy rust or corrosion

  • A spring that looks stretched or distorted

  • A door that suddenly feels heavy

  • A door that will not stay near waist height when lifted manually

You can perform a basic balance check by pulling the red emergency release with the door closed. Then lift the door by hand to about waist height. It should stay reasonably close to that position.

2. You’re Ignoring New or Unusual Noise

Garage doors are not completely silent. But a new sound is worth noticing.

Rain, damp hardware, loose hinges, worn rollers, and rust can all make a residential garage door louder. A grinding, popping, scraping, or banging sound may point to a part that needs attention.

Use the listening test

Stand safely away from the moving door and listen as it opens and closes. Pay attention to:

  • Squealing: Often connected to dry hinges, rollers, or bearings

  • Grinding: May indicate worn rollers or damaged hardware

  • Popping: Can come from spring tension or shifting panels

  • Scraping: Could mean track or panel alignment issues

  • Rattling: Often points to loose hardware

Do not simply turn up the radio and hope the sound goes away. Noise is useful information. Catching the cause early may mean a simple adjustment or lubrication instead of a larger repair.

3. You’re Skipping the Weatherstripping

PNW rain rarely falls straight down. Wind can push water through small gaps around your garage door. Worn weatherstripping also allows cold air, leaves, and pests into the garage.

Inspect the bottom seal and the weatherstripping around the sides and top of the frame. Look for:

  • Cracks or splitting

  • Hardened rubber

  • Sections pulling away from the frame

  • Daylight underneath the closed door

  • Water stains or damp areas inside the garage

How to fix it

If the seal is only dirty, clean it and check that it makes even contact with the floor. If it is cracked, flattened, or missing sections, replacement is usually the sensible fix.

The bottom seal and frame weatherstripping are different parts, so make sure you identify the problem correctly before buying materials. If the retainer is bent or damaged, replacing only the rubber may not solve the leak.

4. You’re Forgetting the Opener Battery and Backup

Storms can bring power outages. If your opener does not have a battery backup, you may need to operate the door manually. That is only practical if the door is balanced and the emergency release works properly.

If your opener does have a backup battery, test it before storm season. Many battery backups provide roughly 20 to 50 cycles, depending on the battery’s age, the door’s weight, and the condition of the system.

Add this to your storm checklist

  1. Check whether your opener has battery backup.

  2. Look for warning beeps or a low-battery indicator.

  3. Test the backup according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  4. Confirm that the red emergency release cord moves properly.

  5. Make sure the door can be lifted manually without excessive force.

Most opener batteries last around two to three years, but conditions vary. A replacement battery is often a straightforward part of residential garage door service.

Battery backup is optional for many homeowners in Washington and Oregon. It is not automatically a requirement. 5. You’re Letting Debris Build Up in the Tracks

Leaves, grit, cobwebs, and small stones can collect in the vertical and horizontal tracks. During storm season, wind and rain can add even more debris.

A dirty track can cause the rollers to bind. You may notice shaking, uneven movement, or a door that stops partway.

A safe between-visit cleanup

  • Close the door.

  • Wipe the inside of the tracks with a dry or lightly damp cloth.

  • Remove leaves and visible debris.

  • Clean the photo-eye sensor lenses with a soft cloth.

  • Check for obvious bends or gaps in the track.

Do not grease the inside of the tracks. Lubricant can make the rollers slide instead of roll and may attract more dirt. Use a garage-door-specific silicone or white lithium lubricant on the appropriate hinges, roller bearings, and springs: not on the track surface.

If a track is bent, loose, or out of alignment, do not try to force it back into place. Track repairs require more than tightening a few bolts. Improper alignment can put stress on the door and opener.

6. You’re Forcing a Stuck or Frozen Door

A garage door can stick because of ice, a damaged weather seal, debris, a broken spring, or an off-track roller. Pressing the opener button repeatedly will not fix the underlying problem.

It can make it worse.

Forcing a stuck door may:

  • Tear the bottom weather seal

  • Bend a panel

  • Damage the opener motor

  • Pull cables off their drums

  • Worsen a track problem

  • Cause the door to fall or shift unexpectedly

If the door is frozen to the concrete, gently clear visible ice with a plastic scraper. Warm water: not boiling water: may help release the seal. Never use excessive force or keep running the opener against resistance.

If the door still will not move, stop using it. Disconnect the opener only if you can do so safely, keep people and vehicles clear, and call a technician.

7. You’re Waiting Too Long to Call a Pro

This is the mistake that turns manageable problems into emergency calls.

A slow door, repeated reversal, frayed cable, worsening squeak, or crooked panel will rarely improve on its own. Storm conditions add more moisture, debris, and strain to the system. Waiting until the door will not open can leave your car trapped inside: or leave your garage unsecured.

Call for professional garage door repair if you notice:

  • A broken or visibly damaged spring

  • Frayed or loose cables

  • A door that is off-track or crooked

  • Grinding, popping, or metal-on-metal sounds

  • A door that shakes or jerks

  • A motor that struggles or repeatedly reverses

  • Safety sensors that do not stop and reverse the door

  • A door that will not stay balanced

  • Water entering around damaged seals

For perspective, common repair ranges may look something like this:

  • Spring replacement: $150–$350

  • Opener repair: $100–$300

  • Cable repair or replacement: $100–$200

  • Sensor or minor track repair: $75–$150

  2. Listen for new or worsening sounds.

  3. Check the bottom seal and perimeter weatherstripping.

  4. Test the opener battery backup or manual release.

  5. Wipe debris from the tracks and sensor lenses.

  6. Make sure the door is not sticking or freezing to the floor.

  7. Schedule service for any problem that does not look or sound right.
